Abstract

In this study, the effect of visual arts education on positive and negative symptoms in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia was examined. The research was selected from patients registered to the Community Mental Health Center at SBÜ Van Regional Training and Research Hospital affiliated with the Ministry of Health. It was carried out with 14 patients who were diagnosed with schizophrenia according to DSM-V diagnostic criteria, aged between 24-45, and who were under regular TRSM follow-up for at least six months. Visual arts training was given for six weeks and paintings were made with oil pastels.In the research, a single-group pretest-posttest experimental design of "experimental study", one of the quantitative research approaches, was used. SAPS-SANS scales were applied to the same subject group before and after visual arts education and practices. The significant difference between the applied tests was provided by Shapiro-Wilk normality test and analysed by Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. In all analyses, p<0.05 was accepted as the significance level. Data were analyzed with SPSS 21 program. As a result of the research, there were significant differences in statistics and Visual Arts Education and practices, together with ongoing medical treatment, had a reducing effect on positive and negative disease symptoms.
