The Effect of Indoor Plants on User Preferences

Abstract

This research is aimed at identifying the degree to which the participants are knowledgeable about indoor plants and their positive effects as well as the extent to which they have plants in their residences and the things they consider when purchasing plants. The research survey, developed for this purpose, has been applied to 225 participants. The results indicated that 92.4% of the participants knew about orchid, 84% knew about aloe vera, and 80.4% knew about daisy. According to another finding, there was no significant correlation between being a home owner and the habit of having plants in the residence and the number of these plants. On the other hand, while there was no significant correlation between the number of rooms and the habit of having plants in the residence, the number of rooms was significantly correlated to the number of plants in the residence and the residences were ranked in the order of 3+1 > 2+1 > 4+1 > 5+1. Another result has revealed that there was a significant correlation between the floor on which the residence is located and the habit of having plants and the number of plants and that the residences were ranked in the order of 2nd floor > 3rd floor > 1st floor > ground floor > 6th floor and above > 5th floor. It was also reported that indoor plants were in the guest room in 66.2% of the residences; 68.4% of the participants preferred ease of care when purchasing indoor plants for their homes; 81.3% of the participants believed that indoor plants have positive effect on the psychology of humans; and 11.6% of the participants were first attracted to plants when they enter an interior space.

Kemal YILDIRIM, Gazi University

Kemal Yildirim, PhD, is presently employed as a Professor at the Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey. Prof. Yıldırım has written over 150 national and international scientific articles in the field of furniture and interior design. His research field consists of environmental psychology, design psychology, color psychology, spatial perception and interior space analysis.

Feray ÜNLÜ, Atılım University

She graduated from Bilkent University, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design in 1991. She received her master's degree in 1998 and proficiency in arts in 2003 from Hacettepe University. Until 2004, she worked as a freelance interior designer in interior design and application projects within professional companies. After that, she started to work as an academician in her field. Since 2009, she has been working as an academician in the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Atılım University.

Nurullah YILMAZ, Gazi University

Nurullah Yılmaz is an undergraduate student at Gazi University, Department of Wood Products Industrial Engineering. He works on issues related to residential environments and on indoor plants and their perception.
